Violence and malnutrition linked before

The president of the Nutrition Society of Australia, Andrew Sinclair, says evidence presented at a conference shows violence and malnutrition are linked.

Professionals have gathered in Adelaide for a four-day conference to cover issues like junk food advertising and how food affects the brain.

Professor Sinclair says evidence from a United Kingdom study into how certain foods influence prisoner behaviour could pave the way for better health programs.

He says supplementing prisoners' diets with micronutrients led to a "very significant reduction in violence" amongst the sample group.

"It's only a small study but the result was really quite remarkable," he said.

"I'm sure all listeners would appreciate the significance of a reduction in violence for a pretty minimal cost of a mixture of vitamins and minerals."
