Man gets 5 years for manslaughter

A fight erupted in the NSW Supreme Court today as a man was jailed for the stabbing death of his mother's boyfriend.

Moorebank man Jason Podesta, 21, was last month convicted of the manslaughter of Steven Bannister, whom he falsely believed was HIV positive.

The jury found him not guilty of the more serious charge of murdering Mr Bannister, who died on November 22, 2006.

As Justice Lucy McCallum sentenced Podesta to a non-parole period of five years in jail, Mr Bannister's mother swore at the judge and lunged at the father of the accused.
