Haneef's lawyer wants secret dossier released

A lawyer representing former Gold Coast-based doctor Mohamed Haneef says a secret dossier used to cancel his client's visa contained no incriminating evidence against his client.

The then Howard government immigration minister, Kevin Andrews, cancelled Dr Haneef's visa on character grounds.

Lawyer Rod Hodgson says he has not seen the dossier and it has not been released by the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

The events surrounding Dr Haneef's arrest are the subject of an inquiry headed by former New South Wales Supreme Court judge, John Clarke QC.

Mr Hodgson says the inquiry needs to be given statutory powers to release the dossier.

"We've been wanting the AFP to come clean with the Australian public and with Dr Haneef's legal team from day one," he said.

"The revelation that there was never anything of substance in that dossier is consistent with Dr Haneef's repeated statements that he's never supported terrorism."
