Nightmare first day for security guard

A security guard was reportedly showing off his new gun when he accidentally shot it into his friend's stomach in Western Sydney today.

A 38-year-old man is in a critical condition in Westmead Hospital after he was shot in the stomach at a Railway Parade address in Lidcombe about 9.30am today, police said.

Police believe the guard drove off in a white Holden Barina.

The man had just got a job as a security guard and was showing the 38-year-old victim his firearm when it went off.

A local plumber, Luke, who knew the alleged gunman, said his friend put the magazine into the gun and it fired.

"There was no malice involved. He's panicked and taken off. We're trying to locate him now," Luke said.

"He's a very placid person... He's just running scared."

Acting Inspector Thorne said it appeared the men knew each other but police were not certain.
