Call for probe into QLD prisoner death

The Prisoners Legal Service says it believes the man died while being restrained by prison officers.

The Prisoners Legal Service wants an independent investigation into the weekend death of a man at a central Queensland jail.

The 32-year-old was on remand when he died on Saturday morning at the Capricornia Correctional Centre.

Corrective Services says prison officers tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

The Prisoners Legal Service says it believes the man died while being restrained by prison officers.

Spokesperson Matilda Alexander says his death was witnessed by other inmates.

"[They] saw the prisoner being dragged along by between four and six officers in an inappropriate restraint position," she said.

She says it is believed the man was either Maori or Pacific Islander, and there is no indication he committed suicide.

Ms Alexander has called for a Crime and Misconduct Commission investigation.

Prison officers returned to work this morning after walking off the job last night over issues arising from the death.
