A speeding driver who hit and killed an off duty Melbourne policeman has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years jail.
25 year old Oak Park man James Aldridge was doing at least 70 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone when he hit and killed 39 year old policeman Graham Elliot in July 2006.
The accident happened on Pascoe Vale Road Strathmore at 6.20am, when Aldridge went through an intersection and hit acting Sergeant Elliot.
In sentencing Aldridge to two-and-a-half years jail, Judge Barbara Cottrall, said speeding drivers were the scourge of our times and people must be deterred from driving dangerously.
After sentencing, Aldridge's girlfriend wept loudly in the courtroom and his mother yelled, "Where's the justice?"
He will serve a minimum of 12 months.
